Another batch of Reviews of games I played.
Just beat The Legend Of Zelda Four Swords Adventure on GameCube. Its a top down 2D adventure game like the Snes A Link To The Past but with better graphics and music and effects. Its up to 4 players and each plays as one of the various colored Links using a GBA and Cable to jack in to the GameCube, but it can be beat as a 1 player thing. A is Item, B is Sword, L is choose Formation of the Links like a Square or Line, R is Grab and with the A Stick for Movement, Pull in that direction, D Pan switches between Links and has you use 1 at a time directly, C Stick is instant Formation, and Start Pauses. I think R regroups the Links if spread out and sometimes you gotta be in the right formation to pull things or solve puzzles. You can carry 1 Item at a time and they give you the one you need in the area you are in so you don't get stuck. Some items can be upgraded by talking to a Great Fairy who looks like a Biblical Angel and do more things. The game tells you what to do or gives hints and if you bite it, you revive by using a Fairy you collected and they stay with you the whole game. Any upgrades are lost at a new level and there's a save file you save after each of the 3 areas of the 8 worlds. Some parts have you going into a subscreen and its GBA Graphics, which is on a GBA of the player using it in 2P+.Hyrule was devolved by Vatti and you gotta collect Force Gems to power up the Sword at 2000 min to beat a level or you go back and reget em. Instead of wandering the area, you choose an area and solve it linear. Its quite forgiving and I liked it better than most GameCube Games. This is what the GameCube should have been used for: Higher performing 2D instead of shoddy 3D. You gotta fight Shadow Links and it plays and controls really well. After the game you see Hyrule healed from the damage and its a nice touch. I got it 30$ used at a Flea Market and I'm glad I did. Plus the Sky Realm thing seems to have inspired Skyward Sword plot. Glad I did this one.
Just beat Zombies Ate My Neighbors on my 150 Genesis Games DS Multicart. Its a top down kind of Run N Gun where you and/or a homie go across over 40 levels to save these people too devolved to know to run away from zombies. 1 button is Weapon, 1 is Item and holding the 3rd lets you tap the other ones to cycle through your items, but its done in real time and not on a pause screen like Mega Man. Its got good graphics and music and goes for a 50s b movie vibe with some 70s and 80s refs like Jason or Leatherface and there's some creative ideas in here. Weapons and Items have limited use but you can find more on the ground or in cupboards. You need Keys for Doors but some can be opened with a Bazooka or using a Monster Potion to turn into a big purple monkey sasquatch and punch em. Some walls can be busted with the Bazooka and maybe the Monster. Some Weapons do better against other foes and some enemies are immortal. The Weed Whacker can clear plants on the floor that harm you and the Cross or w/e makes you invincible to some things and kills foes. There's Passwords but you start w/o extra items and you NEED these items, esp the Bazooka, Monster Potion and Health Packs. Its HARD and I only beat it using save states, but couldn't see the status bar on my 2DS so I had to save and check what Item I had. The Sandworms are tough and its best to go left/right near the bottom of the area and throw grenades. Also the Big Baby Boss can be beat by standing at the bottom and firing up as he spazzes out. You gotta touch the citizens and if they die, they die for good, so you got less to save, but if you run out: Game Over! Extra guys are rare and its easy for citizens to bite it, esp the bimbo cheerleaders who jump and dodge you. Some doors need a Skull Key and cant be forced open. At times you get stuck on walls and get hit. Its a cool game and fun but hard. Theres like 2 bosses and the last one has several formes so save Monster Potions. Also a Credits Level. Glad I did this.
Just beat Willow on my 150 NES Games in 1 GBA Multicart. Its a Zelda 1 Clone where you play as the guy who was in those Leprechaun Movies and go around an overworld with caves and castles to help people with their issues and get items. You get Exp from slaying enemies and have an MP number for casting spells. There's a lot of similar looking areas but they ain't too big. You can find Treasure Chests and get Items and Weapons to use like Swords or Shields and only you have an Item, its on. Some enemies are only hit by certain Swords so its like D&D after it went bad with new Damage Reduction. B is Sword, A is Magic and Start does the Menu. You gotta get to Level 13 to turn this chick back to her real self and Level 14 to beat the Final Boss as you need high enough MP to have enough Ammo to use the Cane to beat her 1st forme. There's no saves but you can use a Password, but I used Save States to make it more convenient. Also its easy to bite it but you get unlimited tries and resummon in a near Village. There's people to talk to and you can summon a Pteranodon guy to fly you to Villages with an Ocarina. You sweep with the Sword when not moving and poke when moving and can often walk away instead of fighting all guys. The graphics are great and have amazing detail for 8 bit. Its by Capcom so its got skill in it. The music is nice and it controls mostly well but some Swords you need to Level Up to swing faster. The 2nd last boss can end you in a few hits so you gotta get on the right and swing him to the left into the wall in a loop. The final boss isn't as tough but if you miss a few Magic Attacks you can't beat Forme 1 and gotta make your way back. Its a well made game that's a bit tricky but worth a play, but use a guide to know where to go. Also some text is tough to make out. Good story and characters but I'm not sure most were in the Movie. Nice blend of Earthy, Light and Dark Colors in here and the effects are pretty cool. Glad I did this.
Just beat Mr. Gimmick in my 150 NES Games GBA Multicart. Its a platform game by Sunsoft where you play as this Yokai thing and gotta save this little Anime girl from being captured by her toys who were jealous of her liking him more. Kinda like Toy Story meets Little Nemo. A is Jump and holding B summons a Star to throw by releasing it. Up and B lets you use an item but its easy to accidentally hit up and waste em. I hear Down and B lets you choose items and you can hold up to 3. The graphics are great and it came out in 92 so it had to go against the Snes and Genesis and the music is grand like Sunsoft always does. There's infinite Continues but it does no good as you gotta find these Hidden Treasures to unlock the final level and if you Continue, you lose em. The game is hard and you get 2 hits and can get 2 extra ones with Yellow Jars that I think only last the level. You're gonna want a guide to know where the hidden areas are and theres a lot of 1 hit kills like spikes and water. Its got a physics engine that has momentum and you got weight so if you're running, you don't stop on a dime and slide off. The star you throw (and only get 1 at a time until t goes off) moves according to how thrown, like with height and if moving. Its tricky and you can bounce it around to get to places and can ride it if jumped on. Its a well made game but was pretty tough. Didn't synchro with me and even using save states so I didn't gotta keep climbing back up or when I accidentally wasted the item, it was pretty tough with biting it cheaply often. Glad I did it but I probably won't do it again. Oh and good cut scenes and art and nice colors. It can be beat in like half an hour on a perfect run, but that's gonna need a lot of training.
Just played Cliffhanger on my 218 Sega Genesis Games Multicart. Its bad. You play as Stallone from the movie and do Beat Em up things against the same few guys, but also you got some bad platforming levels where you gotta jump across holes in the glaciers butt. Also there's chase levels where you gotta escape an avalanche or swarm of bats or something and if it hits you, you die and gotta do it over. Also its across an obstacle course of logs and snow piles and pits and on mistake and its restart. A is punch, B is Kick and C is Jump and you can Pause with Start. If picking up a weapon with A you use it with A and sometimes you gotta hold a direction to jump further or get speed before it or something. I don't know, this game isn't good. The fighting is ok but you don't show pain when taking hits, only a drop in a red and black Life Bar. but those Beat The Crusher Levels ruin the game. There's also wall climbing levels where you are better off just tanking snipers as you heal after getting to the campfire at the top/checkpoint. There's bosses and you can jump kick and thats pretty much it. There's said to be codes or tricks for extra guys but they never work and you only get 3, 5 or 7 guys (chosen at the start) and 1 continue. I used a turbo pad with Start on Auto and made it kind of slo mo but even then the game is unplayable as jumping don't always work. I like Stallone and Cliffhanger was an ok movie i think, I haven't seen it in years. But this game is just bad. I wanted to like it but its pretty much Unplayable. Oh and its 1 player and the graphics and music are fine and get the job done. The cut scenes are good and the beat em up parts function. But they tried to make it into a platformer thing and have you chased by bats or snow. Glad I gave it a chance but it didn't hold up. I think the Gameboy version is better. I mean Double Dragon had similar things but it wasn't this bad. Its not worth beating or the irritation.
Just beat Evolution: The World of Sacred Device from Dreamcast on my Evolution Worlds GameCube Disk. Its an RPG where you play as this 16 year old who looks 8 and use a party of 3 to go through dungeons and fight bosses. Its condensed from the Dreamcast version and has voices that weren't in the Dreamcast version but the graphics are pretty good and the music is nice. Its got that 90s anime style like that weird Yoyo anime or Mon Colle Knights or Battle B Da Man and I kinda like it. Its pretty early cg game looking but has charm and heart. In turn based battles you choose an action like attack or skill that uses points that recharge when using normal moves and and can use items to heal or affect the opponent. Theres a grid system where you can go closer or further from the foe or be moved that way but I think it mainly affects how much damage you do and if some attacks hit. a lot of the game is cutscenes and this is only the 1st half of the GameCube Version as both are told as one story but if Me beating Super Mario 2 on Mario Deluxe counts as beating Mario 2, I think this counts. The game isn't too hard and you can buy stronger attacks and skills by spending points you get from various battles. In each dungeon you go through floors to find the way up until you reach a boss. I find it best to search all the area as seen on a map on screen to fight all enemies and get all items in chests. You can equip items to boost stats and pay money after missions to upgrade your Cyframe (weapon thing) and make it stronger. But if you take a 3rd party member into the dungeon, she might get some of the reward money as payment. L/R is rotate Camera, X and Y change view to zoomed in and shuffle party members, b is cancel A is accept and Start brings up the Menu. You can save in most places except dungeons and there's usually a save point before a boss. I like how the creeper prince is voiced by Ratburn from Arthur. Its a good game and I'm glad I did this one.
Just beat Evolution 2: Far Off Promise on my Evolution Worlds GameCube Disk. It was 1st on Dreamcast but this version changed a few things and added voice acting. In here, the 1st games guys go to some place by train and stay at a Hotel to to missions for this group that pays you. You have up to 3 in the Party but 1 is main guy and 1 is usually the main girl. Good graphics and the music is nice and it plays pretty well. A is Yes, B is no or Jump, Y and X make you reorder the party out of battle, and changing view from above or behind, L/R is spin Camera, D Pad or A Stick move, and Start pauses. Its not that hard but in the last dungeon, you don't get the girl and gotta rely on items to heal. You get Artifacts to sell to the group and can combine em before selling to get more $. There's a training Dungeon where you get more TP to unlock better moves but less Exp. Also characters get TP even when not in battle, but it only goes to 9999. The best character is Pepper Box as shes got a strong cannon. You can change Cyframes to use different weapons but I stayed with what I had. You can upgrade Cyframes with money and I think there's some Trading Sequence of talking to people and they swap an item around but didn't find anyone who wanted the Dowsing Stone. There's items that show the full map in a Dungeon but its sometimes better to make the map onscreen by walking over it as you can see where you've been. There's coins to buy lottery tickets and you save and load to access it but its the same each load so no cheating. You save outside of Dungeons and at points in em and start out the last door you went in when loading. Its pretty easy and forgiving until the last Dungeon and only Game Overed once on the 2nd last boss. You get HP and a lower bar for using Skill Moves and fight on a grid where you can go forward or back and closer does/gets more damage and vice versa. Its a well made game and I had a good time with it. Glad I did this.
Just beat Evolution Worlds on GameCube. Its the 2 Evolution Dreamcast games with changes and actors from Arthur. Good graphics and the music is nice and it plays good. A is Yes, B is no or Jump, Y and X make you reorder the party out of battle and changing view from above or behind, L/R is spin Camera, D Pad or A Stick move, and Start pauses. Its pretty forgiving but the last dungeon is tough. The both Evolution games have the Healer taken before the last battle and you gotta use items to heal. You get Exp to Level Up and there's items to wear and use to boost stats and TP that goes to 9999 to unlock new skills to use. You gotta unlock it 1 at a time and work along to get the higher cost ones. The best character is Pepper Box as shes got a strong cannon. You can change Cyframes to use different weapons but I stayed with what I had. You can upgrade Cyframes with money. There's items that show the full map in a Dungeon but its sometimes better to make the map onscreen by walking over it as you can see where you've been. The story is pretty good and I missed most of the JRPGs in the 90s and 00s so this was kinda new to me in some ways. I beat it in around 20ish hours and it keeps track of how long you play. It heals after leaving a Dungeon and I saw it going for 35$ before but passed it over, only to finally get it for 50$ and the Middle Man. Its got good voice work and each character is different and has a unique style. I often play a Dungeon for 2 hours, beat it, and save and do real life things. Some walls can break and have goodies in the area. Its a well made game and I had a good time with it. Glad I did this.
Just beat Pinobee & Phoebee on GBA. Its kind of a Platformer where you play as a Male and Female Bee Robot on a thing on Pinocchio and gotta get back your heart crystal thing and fight enemy bug robots. The Male has more life and the Female has more energy. You are powered by Flowers you collect like Coins in Mario or Garbage in Awesome Possum but use these to do a Dash move. A is Jump, but in air its Dash, B is Power Dash than can break different things, and you can collect CDs to unlock more power like Extra HP or more Dashes. You assign these CD Points on the Menu that has a Wrench Icon and its different for both characters. The game is in Japanese and I managed to wiggle my way through but when I had to get through this small hole in this wall, I didn't know what to do. I eventually found in the options there's a 30 CD costing icon of a small person and it shrinks you down. You get unlimited tries and each level you gotta find the Gem or Shard or w/e and get to the end. also there's CD's to get and people to help to repay you with their help. For most of the game I didn't know of the upgrades and thought it was just tough but it was easier once I Powered Up. The Graphics are good and the music is nice and it controls well. Its got this prerendered like thing going with simple CG models that are pretty cool like ReBoot or Beast Wars. You can quit a level and go back in and there's an option to have signs point to where to go. Its colorful and upbeat and even the darker levels are still alive somewhat. Glad I played this one. Its not too hard and pretty forgiving but there's like no info on this game online. It only came out in Japan and I heard of it in Nintendo Power in the coming games but it never came here. If you run out of Flower Power you move slow and can only do a small hover. Also holding up on the ground lets you hover a bit. If 1 guy bites it, the other takes over and can be revived at a checkpoint. Both guys have their own Flowers. Not a bad game.
Just beat Coca-Cola Kid for Game Gear on my 2DS. Its a platformer like thing where you play as this 90s/80s dude who has to save his mom or sister, I don't know, its in Japanese and I only know a few dozen words. 1 Button is jump and 1 is kick and down and kick is a charge to do a rush, kinda like in Sonic, while Down and Jump is a slide. You can increase your life bar and buy Continues with Coins you find by kicking open boxes or barrels and you got 2 levels to get to the end, then the 3rd is the boss, kinda like Sonic. You can Wall Jump but its kinda off cuz you gotta jump BEFORE pressing the D Pad. Also you can slide slow on walls and can climb if you get on an edge. The wall jumping is kinda tricky as it kinda spazzes automatically and you can't duck if you are moving so its not as instant in response. The last 2 levels are kinda tricky and there's parts over pits that with the iffy controls, often have you falling in em. Also there's a momentum thing where you move as if fighting against wind or not getting much distance if jumping from a standstill. The bosses are a bit tricky but usually fall in 4-5 hits. The game boss is actually the easiest and is this diamond queen who I beat on my 1st attempt. The graphics are nice and colorful and the music is nice but some parts are tricky to tell what you can jump on. Some parts you gotta break through walls with a kick or slide or charge, kinda like Sonic and there's no way to tell if you can from looking at it. Often you gotta do a charge rush and jump as you reach the edge to get higher, kinda like Sonic, and there's usually several paths to take to get to the end, kinda like Sonic. Its not bad but could use some tuning. Glad I played this. but based on what I've seen, its better than Pepsiman, although I never played that one. Oh and you can buy Cola Disks to throw at foes but I think they stop when you get hit. You get a Shop Option after each boss. Huh, Its by Aspect who did a few Game Gear Sonic Games. It Fits.
Just beat X Men on my 106 Game Gear Games GBA Cart. You play as Wolverine and Cyclops and unlock other X Men as it goes on somehow. 1 button is Jump, the other is Attack and Start turns on/off the Mutant Powers that are done with Attack. These Powers have a Power Bar and are refilled with X Tokens. There's also Hearts that heal and Blue X Tokens that do something. There's 2 difficulties, Piece O'Cake and I Don't Think So and the difference is, the 2nd has 2 extra levels that are 1 long walk in a straight line, or flying if you got the right X Man. If your guy runs outta life, then you choose a remaining X Man and try again. Some parts let you choose which level to go to next at the part where you choose your X Man. Its got good graphics and colors and the Music is pretty nice. It controls pretty well and you can Double Jump with Tapping Jump a 2nd time in the right moment. Its not hard but the last level with Magneto is tough as you often run outta X Power and gotta punch him and his Magnet Field can do high damage at times. You can't pause but I think there's a way as I saw a longplay do it but I'm not sure how. Much of the game is wandering around but if you watch a longplay or use a guide its can be beat in under an hour. You can crouch and attack while crouching and many guys can't touch you when doing it. Also you can Do The Duck Walk while crouching. I like the little touches like when you turn on Cyclops's powers, his visor lights up. Its 8 bit but a decent game, until the final fight with Magneto who you gotta attack when his shields are down. Also the 1st boss can't be harmed by you and you gotta get him to stand on a fire burner and cook him, maybe with punching in the right spot while crouching until he's well done to medium rare. Many bosses are you walking back and taking pot shots at em with ranged attacks of X Powers. Its pretty good for a simple 8 bit game. Glad I did this one, but I used Save States so I'd not be redoing the 1st ones all night.
Just beat Devilish: The Next Possession on my 150 Sega Genesis Games DS Multicart. Its an Arkanoid like game with a Phantasy Twist. You play as a Prince and Princess in love who got turned into stone paddles by a Daemon, but this Ball showed up and you can use the Paddles to bounce it like Breakout. A and C turns the Top Paddle Left, Right and Center and B changes how fast the Paddles move. The D Pad moves the Paddles around and they are always 1 above the other, but Up/Down moves the Top one in height. Sometimes you gotta go sideways and turn the Paddle to rebound it off the bouncing side of it. You break blocks annd can get Power Ups like a Fire Dragon that busts through blocks instead of rebounding. Also is 1 that makes the Top Paddle Ghosting so the Ball passes through it for a while. There's a Time Limit on each level and after facing a boss, you gotta get to The Hole at the end of the course. Its a bit hard at times and each boss has a different gimmick. Its by Sage's Creations who did Shadow Blasters and its a bit off with the Ball rebounding off the sideways Paddle and sometimes it feels like the Ball goes in the bottom and you can't do anything or it don't register, or you miss it by a bit. Its got well done Graphics and the Music is nice. Good horrorish scenery and effects. The right side of the screen shows your time and stuff but on my DS Cart it showed more graphics of the level instead of the stats. So I used Save States to make up for that. Also if you run out of time you Restart the whole level. Its not bad but could be better. Creative idea for a story and I like the Arkanoid style, but it could have used a bit of tuning. Glad I played this. Oh and you can change the controls and difficulty and I don't think you get Continues, which if playing regular would make the game pretty brutal. Yeah its kinda flawed unless you get extra Continues with points. Wait, If you use A C and Left on the Title Screen you get 100 guys. K, This can be done.
Just beat The Cyber Shinobi for Sega Master System on my 2DS. Its a hack/slash kinda game where its the distant future year of 2XXX and Zeed is back as Cyber Zeed so Joe Musashi's grandson Joe Musashi has to stop em from nuking the world or w/e. 1 button is Jump, 1 is Attack, Up makes you Jump Higher or use a Special Weapon like a gun or grenade thing. Both Buttons and Up at the same time is Ninjas Magic and it and Weapons use a Bar fed by Letters you collect for both those, Power and Life. I think you get infinite Continues but if you use 1 you restart the level. If you bite it, you go to the start of the area with the same Bar Stats so using a special attack don't refill. Its got simple but cool graphics and the music is good. It controls fine but could be better. There's traps like floors that fall into pits and often you gotta beat out all the guys in the screen to advance. Its not too bad and you can Do The Duck Walk by crouching at the same speed as a standing walk. You can't use Weapons or Magic when jumping or crouching and gotta use all Up/buttons at once to do Magic.. Its not a bad game but I used save states to make it easier. Glad I did this. Not much platforming and its kinda like the 8 bit Shadow Dancer but with a life bar. Its 6 levels and not long but a decent play. Its also called Shinobi Part 2.
