Game Reviews Volume 40 From 2026 Part I

My next bunch of games I did. I lost my 2DS and got a new one and got busy with other things but from January to August I did these ones.

Just beat Goof Troop for Snes on my DS R4. Its a puzzle action game based on the 90s cartoon where you play as Goofy who's slower but does more damage, or his son Max, who's the opposite and kinda worse. There's 5 levels and after you beat 1 you get a 5 image password that stays on if you game over or accidentally start a new one and die off. 1 button kicks blocks or picks up/throws things to beat enemies and when the arms are up, you can catch things like thrown pots or cannonballs. 1 button uses the item and in 2 player each gets 1 but 1 player you have 2 you cycle through with R. I couldn't get it to pause and save states didn't work so I had to use Passwords to return where I left of or leaving the 2DS on Sleep. You have a few lives and get continues with Blue Gems you find but under pots or barrels or whatever are fruit that give Health or Red Gems for extra Guys Get enough fruit and its an extra guy but at 8 it stops giving it out til you get hit. Normally you die in 1 hit and resummon at the entrance of the room you came in. There's puzzles like kicking blocks to a square or beating all enemies or bringing a key to open a door that can be tricky but eventually you'll get it. I struggled with this til I found you can keep going in the same room back and forth, check the pots, get Fruit/1UPs and repeat til full. Using a Continue has you restart the room and on bosses you can't go back and refill lives so keep trying to find a way to do better on full Lifes. After biting it its 1 hit kills til you run outta guys. The game boss is rough but after hours of redoing the last level I eventually got him. Nice Snes Disney Capcom Graphics and the music is good. It could control better with me trying to kick a block and it not working or Goofy spazzing around it. Its meant as a 2 player game but would be harder to synchro with another guy. Glad I finished it but I probably won't do it again. Its kind of an ordeal. I used Goofy as Max is weak. Pits are death no matter HP.

Just beat Hokuto no Ken 6 - Gekitou Denshou Ken Haou e no Michi for Snes on my DS R4. Its a 2D 1 on 1 Fighting game where you use guys from Hokuto No Ken 1 and 2. You choose 1 and fight the rest of em and if you don't use any Continues(You get like 4) you fight a hidden boss, The Thoughts of the Hokuto Ryu Ken successors, which is a gray Kenshiro. A B X Y is attacks, L is Super Move when you build up enough Toki from hitting the foe without being hit much, and has 2 levels for different moves, and R can do some move. The graphics are kinda weird but work but the guys look kinda Devolved in 16 bit. Its not like Street Fighter and often has you smacking on each other til 1 gets enough Toki for a move and does it then repeat. I find ducking and attacking can get em but not against Raoh/Kaioh. I used Rei cuz he's the coolest and after beating it, tried again with Falco and it was easier. Maybe as I knew how to fight em. I did use save states to save time and it may be the only game I know where you can use KuroYasha. The music is good and there's digitized voices that ain't too bad. Its not deep and there's a 2 player and a free mode besides the 1 player game and it plays not so bad but could be better. The toughest guys were Raoh and Kaioh but the game can be beat in under 30 mins on a perfect run. The fights are 1 battle per fight and some things like Mr. Heart's body gulging around is interesting. There's Heart but no Shin and KuroYasha but no Hyo or Han? Who chose this line up? But the characters look and fight different and there's no Mirror Match except Kenshiro vs Shadow Kenshiro. Its kind of a lite game but if you like Hokuto No Ken its fun to see Rei Vs Souther or Falco Vs Raoh. When your Toki is enough you get a colored aura and use L to do the move. Often you can jump over guys and they take a bit to turn around and hit him. Ken can do Muso Tensei which makes him invincible for a bit. Glad I did this one. Its a decent lite game.

Just beat Dune: The Battle for Arrakis on my 218 Sega Genesis Ganes Multicart. Its a Real Time Strategy game base on the book/80s movie where you do 9 missions getting harder each time, usually blowing all enemy buildings. A is yes, B s no but  can have you make another of the last thing made. C is held to speed the curser you move around to click on things and tell it what to do. If you move a unit to a place it stays there and attacks foes who near. You can click on one unit then another to make it follow it and Daisy Chain em to make a Convoy. You play as Harkonen(The strongest)Ordos(Non Canon)or Atreides(The good guys)and some have different units or powers. I used Harkonnen as its strong. You make buildings that do things like Wind Traps for energy or Factory's for making vehicles. You need a Refinery/Harvesters to collect Spice to use as money or you can't do Jack. As you go on you get more options and don't need past ones. Like Pokemon where you don't need Butterfree/Raticate later. The AI is bad so you can trick foes to hit their own buildings if you are behind em. Without using Concrete 1st the building has less HP but you can fix it. Everything moves in real time so you gotta look around but there's voices saying whats up. Turrets attack near enemies and there is Fog Of War where the map is dark til you explore. Sandworms eat 3 of your units then leave but you can kill em. There's Passwords that are real words and the Graphics/Music are well done. It plays well and each side gets 1 Construction Building to make buildings. If its gone, you can't make new buildings but if you get the foe's one its easier to end em. The last round has the enemy use big missiles that can wipe out an area so spread you units from the base and end his palace/Construction things. I like using Launchers to hit from a distance. Its fun and I find myself not wanting to rush to the end but just playing it. Its by Virgin and Westwood who did grand things. Glad I did This.

Just beat Sonic Frontiers on PS4. Its an open world Sonic game where you get the Chaos Emeralds by getting Keys from levels unlocked by Gears from beating enemies/solving puzzles that unveils the map 1 part at a time/gives rails to fast grind across it. The game tells you how to do all the moves and you get Exp by finding bits of data from beat foes or around the area. A new thick is the Cyloop where you hold a button to leave a trail you draw around things to turn on or get free rings/items from the ground. You get Red/Blue fruit to boost Attack/Defense and find Yokai to return to boost max speed/rings. There's purple coins for Fishing with Big The Cat for Tokens to buy these things and Things to get enough to unlock more dialogue with the character of the level. The levels have 4 goals: Beat fast, get enough rings, Get all 5 Red Rings, finish level. You don't gotta do it all but each goal met gets a key and all 4 gets 3 extra keys. You unlock skills with Exp and the camera is the Right Stick but its kinda bad and moves too close or in ways you don't want. Light Dash is down on left Stick but don't work often. The voices are different again but sound wrong at 1st til you get used to em. The story is deep and well made but more serious/less fun. Its like Sailor Moon crystal compared to the good 90s one. You get the Emeralds and go Super to face the Boss then go to a new land and do it again. I hated it at 1st but it grew on me so I liked some parts after adapting. Still its not really being a Sonic Game but trying to be Zelda Breath Of The Wild. You can do things at your own rate/order and get infinite tries/can restart a level as much as you want. In loading screens you practice moves and some parts are Shmups with White/black shots you counter with the same one like Ikaruga or quick time events. They tried to make it meaningful and deep but the camera and control could use work. Its not awful but takes getting used to. Glad I did this.

Just beat Demons of Asteborg on Genesis. Its a 2021 game by Kickstarter that plays kinda like Castlevania where you platform and solve puzzles the beat a boss at the end. Each level has a new item to use that goes away after beating it. Some think you otta keep em like Zelda but this lets each level be more focused and you don't gotta try everything til you figure it out. The bosses often have a 2nd pattern where you gotta end em with the level item. There's autosave after each level and a shop to buy things between levels like extra moves or lives. Falling in spikes/pits sends you back to the entry of the area with a bit of damage but running outta life sends you back to a checkpoint. Game over means back to title screen to reload a save but you only got 3 lives. 1 button is attack, 1 is jump, 1 is magic with a bar that refills. You can change the controls in options and it don't save. The graphics are great an there's 1 Space Harrier level and good dark fantasy graphics like an 80s thing. The music is good and it plays well with showing how to do things at times. I went in w/o spoilers and it was a good choice. The story is good and once you know what to do, its not so tough, but the last level is tricky and needs good reflexes. I got this and Astebros as I got a coupon code for like 10% of from the site from kickstarting DaemonClaw. Its a solid game and worth going into. Glad I did this one. You can go back and forth in some areas to ice the same guys to get life and there's wall jumps like Mega Man X. Also is a roll/slide like Contra Hard Corps with Down and jump that you can evade some things. You can't jump down through platforms though. Its got that 80s PG style where its dark but clean so no mature themes or swearing I recalled.

Just beat Virtual Boy Wario Land on my 2DS. Its kind of a 2D platform thing where you use Wario to go around this ancient temple with crazy tech to get the Key and get to the end of the level then repeat. You can go into the background at times and look at smaller seeming Wario in the distance which can be tricky to see what to do. There's Power Ups with Hats that let you use a button to: flamethrower, glide by pressing left/right w/button or Shoulder Charges with speed and butt stomp harder things by jumping then hold Down on the D Pad. There's Garlic to go to big Wario when small and you can combine the Hat Power Ups to Dragon Wario that lets you do a flame shot that busts stone and can glide. If you touch anything you shrink to small Wario and next hit kills you but I think there's infinite Continues and you lose the hidden Treasure you find in secret places to get a better ending. On my 2DS Emulator the VB plays slow so it took a while and I used Save States. There's mini games between levels to bet money/Hearts to get more and with enough you get extra guys. There's a mini boss before the boss that you gotta avoid its attacks and butt stomp it when it dives into the ground on its underside. There's like 4 bosses you gotta do and they have jumping between fore/background. I hear the game is hard and can see why if played at real speed/not using Save States. Plus some things are hard to see and I used a guide when not knowing where to go a few times. The graphics are good but its black/shades of red. The music I didn't get as its all slowed on this. I liked it and do prefer Wario over Mario but its got some cryptic things. A bit more Polish could make it shine. And you hold L/R to run and can couch/crawl with down. Glad I did this one. Not a big fan of the background jumping as its zoomed out, but this was pretty solid. And ancient tech w/Demon Clown bosses seems kinda occult. There' a time limit an you can go back to past levels but in order/then redo em.

Just beat Jack Bros for Virtual Boy on my 2DS. Its part of the Megami Tensei series by Atlus. You go through like 6 worlds with 60 floors and find Keys to unlock the next Floor while going in a maze like the GB Zelda Games. A button fires an attack like Fireball for Jack Lantern, Snowball for Jack Frost and knife for Jack Ripper. The shoulder button does a super move like Freeze enemies for Frost, Screen Blast for Lantern and slaying all foes on screen for Ripper. You got Time instead of life but getting hit lowers it. Run out and you do the area again from the start. There's more Super Move items you find and Clocks like Back To The Future on NES for more time, which is in seconds and can get pretty high. At the bottom of each area is a boss you beat and get a 4 number password to return to. The graphics are pretty good for Red/black but can be tough to see at times. It plays pretty well and every time you reach a new thing, Pixie tells you whats up, but only the 1st time, as biting it and retrying don't get it back. The story is you're Yokai or whatever out on Halloween too late and gotta get back or be trapped out of your realm. It played really slow on my 2DS so I use Save States so it won't take forever. Its pretty cool and I only bit it once on the spider boss. There's moving statues that zoom in to get you in you cross the path but in some parts the move back and forth so if you stand just right near em after they zoom in, you can get em to keep attacking when you're a bit out of reach. There's power ups like ghosts that block hits like Bakura in Yugioh Season 5, and an invincibility thing that speeds you up and has you blink Red. Its pretty cool and I used Jack Lantern as I like Halloween. Glad I did this one. Its pretty well done an cool. Got that 90s clean horror thing going with no swearing or blood but a good atmosphere. The final boss has 2 formes and is the master of their world but you fight him for some reason.

Just beat Jackal on my 150 Nes games GBA Multicart. Its a top down Run N Gun game by Konami where you play as a Jeep on enemy Turf to beat em 1 button fires the Machine Gun that only aims up and the other is the Grenade that can be Powered up to a missile then again to a Cross Burst that takes out foes in a D Pad Direction +.  You move where the D Pad is pressed, no Tank Controls, and the Grenade always fires where you're facing. You can rescue captives by blowing houses with the Grenade and waiting near em to have em come in the Jeep. If you touch foes or shots you blow in 1 hit and the captives scatter to recollect. You get em to a chopper pad to save em and some houses have 1 guy who upgrades your weapon, but get hit once and its back to square 1. You get 3 continues and a buncha lives plus get more with points. The Arcade had a rotating Joystick to turn and aim when moving. The NES version controls well but its petty tough with1 hit kills. I used Save States and it still took a bit, but it can be beat in like under 10 mins on a perfect speed run. The worst enemies are the Choppers who come in and sniper you. Plus some tanks that spray shots. The music and Graphics are good but the screen don't scroll as well and often I'm close to the edge and enemies pop in. If you fall you resummon where you bit it but using a Continue restarts the level. Its a pretty solid game. I'm not the biggest on top down Run N Gun games like this after Super C but this was pretty good There's like 6 levels each different and Its got that G I Joe or Chuck Norris 80s thing going. Glad I did this one. Oh and you can run over human enemies.

Just beat Sonic Generations on my Sonic X Shadow Generations game for PS4. Its a platform Game and port of the ps3 game for Sonic's 20th Anniversary. You play as past and now Sonic and do reimagined versions of 9 Sonic Games, 3 Genesis, 3 128 bit and 3 modern, Past Sonic is in more 2D trying to be Genesis while modern goes for a more Sonic Unleashed thing. You can jump, boost, spin dash and drop dash plus other things like homing attack, stomp and sidestep. L/R 1 is sidestep but I mix it up with boost R2 so it throws me off. Nice graphics and great music but after like an hour I feel like blowing chunks. Yo Chunks! Get in here! There's skills to equip but you don't need em. After beating both acts of 3 zones once you get challenges to unlock boss keys to face the area boss and get Chaos Emeralds from rival fights or bosses. You can't control the camera and often I miss a spring or fall in a pit over and over. You can get infinite tries and play til you win. Its really forgiving but kinda badly made in parts. Plus it seems the later game levels get worse than the 1st ones. The writing is good but the X Shadow pack censored things like Rouge's bust or dialogue. There's a lot to unlock like songs or art and Chao hidden in levels. I beat it in 5 hours and some parts were fun but some got on my nerves. Glad I did it but not sure I'd do it again. Didn't like Sky Sanctuary with the clouds or Planet Whisp much and the Whisp Powers were kinda bad. Nice to see 2D/3D versions of past games that weren't that way. The voicing was pretty good and you can use D Pad or A Stick. Its not bad and autosaves with a few save slots but could've been better. Good Speed and R2 for past Sonic can be used for Spin Dash but you gotta charge a bit or it ain't as good I like the bright colors and upbeat tunes. A decent tribute to years of Sonic. And getting crushed by spike blocks falling don't end you but does spill rings when using invincibility.

Just beat Sonic X Shadow Generations on PS4. Had to import from Japan from there not being a PS4 one here but it plays in English. Its got a remake of Sonic Generations which is good but gets worse as it goes on. The Shadow part is 6 levels with 2 acts, 1 more 3D 2 more 2D where you go through past games. It plays pretty well and has mostly good control. After you beat both acts and enough levels you unlock the boss room but gotta do challenges like beat a level with 1 ring or go through enough hoops. These are pretty easy at times and once you get enough you get boss keys to face the boss then get a new Doom Power to access more of the area. The Manta and Squid ones I had issue with. The 3D hub world has things to do but the camera is bad. Even after reversing the directions it was too close and made me wanna barf. The graphics and music are great and the story is well done. It got me teary eyed and I related to Maria helping Shadow with his anger. This is why people say Sonic is better than Mario. More edge and more grown up, but still clean.. Took a few hours to get through but its a mostly well made one. It even made the Sonic 06 levels good, probably cuz they actually FINISHED em. You got unlimited tries and regular checkpoints so play til you get good or lucky. There's Chaos Control  to slow time for like 5 seconds and you refill the thing to use it by beating foes. The controls can be changed but only from 1 of 2 schemes. Having X to jump then Square to homing is new but works so you don't accidentally homing it. Its one of the better Sonic games and I'm glad I did this one. It adds to the Shadow story well. The Boost recharges with rings/beating guys and you unlock art or things by fining glowing things in levels then opening chests with em. The game says what buttons to push at times and is pretty forgiving. A solid time.
